Half of the Central Valley Conference women's basketball games for the Reedley College Lady Tigers are in a span of seven days.
The first of those contests came last Saturday night as the fourth-ranked team in the state, the College of the Sequoias Giants, defeated the Tigers 67-57 in the Tiger Den.
Reedley hosts CVC leader and third-ranked team in the state, Merced College, on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. The contest follows a 5 p.m. men's game with West Hills Coalinga.
Another doubleheader is set for Saturday, Jan. 26 against district rival Fresno City College. The men's game begins the action at 3 p.m. with the women's contest at 5.
In women's action, Sequoias (3-1, 18-3) used a trio of 3-pointers to build as much as a 12-point lead in the third quarter. Stephanie Cervantes (Dinuba) scored half of Reedley's 14 third-quarter points as COS took a 50-41 lead into the break.
The Lady Tigers (2-1, 10-8) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to one. But Alaysia Reed's third 3-pointer of the game rebuilt the lead to four. Reed led all scorers with 23.Hailey Scott had a double-double for the winners with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Shae Sanchez made four 3-pointers and finished with 16.
Reedley led by as many as nine points on two occasions in the first quarter at 18-9 and 22-13. But Sequoias picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter holding Reedley to just five points. The Lady Giants scored the final eight points of the second quarter to take a 30-27 lead into the intermission.
Conley scored 10 of the Lady Tigers' 22 first-quarter points but was held scoreless in the second quarter.
